Background/History
The Lee family tradition of crafting fine gemstone carvings dates back several generations to the final days of Imperial China, when Hing Wa Lee's father honed his formidable skills while serving as Imperial gem carver for the royal family. During that country's violent post-WWII Cultural Revolution, however, he perished under the regime of Mao Tse Tung and he was spirited away to Hong Kong for safety. It was there that the 14 year old Hing Wa Lee was taken under the wing of one of his father's proteges and taught the skills that would one day establish him as one of the world's most acclaimed gem carvers and jewelry creator.
Hing Wa Lee later formed a wholesale jewelry company in Hong Kong and soon became a leading expert in the industry with more than 200 apprentices working under his tutelage. Among them was his eldest son, David, who began demonstrating a prodigious aptitude for gem carving as well an intuitive business sense at an early age.
A pivotal moment in the family history came in the mid-1970s during which the Smithsonian Institutes collection of antique and historically significant gem carvings were severely damaged due to staff mis-handling while moving them around. A team was assembled and sent out to all corners of the far east in search of a person whom can repair these irreplacible pieces of art. Hing Wa Lee was found and hired by this prestigious organization to restore the works. He then brought his family to America to undertake the project -- a task that garnered him a modicum of celebrity status after numerous appearances on such prominent television programs as "Good Morning America." As part of Hing Wa Lee's artistic nature, he loved teaching his art of gem stone carvings. He began teaching this art in a class to students at the University of Virginia and eventually across the United States. He also wrote a book titled, "How to carve Jade and Gems."
In 1980, Hing Wa Lee relocated his family to Southern California. After settling in Southern California, Hing Wa Lee decided to permanently establish his corporate headquarters in downtown Los Angeles.
With his father's wholesale business firmly in place, David Lee began contemplating how he could successfully branch out on his own. Having spent his entire life learning every facet of the highly competitive jewelry industry and earning his business degree from USC, he formed a retail establishment that set new standards for excellence, service, price and selection. In honor of his father, he opened Hing Wa Lee Jewelers in San Gabriel in 1993 with jewelry designed and manufactured by him and his family. In an effort to expand his product line, he began nurturing relationships with some of the world's most respected luxury goods companies and, before long, he became the authorized dealer for brands such as Rolex and Cartier within just a few years of starting the business -- a feat unparalleled in the jewelry retail industry.
David Lee, CEO of Hing Wa Lee Group, is a third-generation gemstone carver and entrepreneur who has earned international acclaim for being a market leader in the luxury retail industry. His clients include celebrities, dignitaries and other fashion- and style-conscious consumers from around the world. In 2005, he founded an affluent lifestyle magazine called Vivid which targeted the affluent Chinese-Americans residing the U.S. Currently, it is still the only affluent lifestyle magazine catering to the affluent Chinese-Americans..
Hing Wa Lee, Chairman of Hing Wa Lee Group, spends his time investing and developing real estate projects in California, Hong Kong, and Mainland China. As he reflects back to his days of humble beginnings after the passing of his father in mainland China, he is grateful for all he had accomplished today. Not only was he able to bring his art of gemstone carving to the United State but to also bring his family, his mother, and his siblings to a better place to live-the United States of America, a land of opportunity.
