Interview Q&A
How long have you been in business?
The Gardens opened its doors in 1961.
What is your primary product or service?
Attractive homes, dining, amenities, wellness programs, and coverage of costs for health care and long term care for older adults for life. With 75 resident-led committees and activity groups, residents participate in making the community what they want it to be, making policies for resident life, organizing their programs and services for enrichment, education and entertainment, and other engaging activities desired.
How did you first become interested in your line of business? (if owner) - What is your background? (If owner or store manager)
The Gardens is managed by a team of professionals with backgrounds in operating residential communities for the elderly, managing health care services, finance, and marketing and community relations.
How do you differentiate yourself from other businesses in your category and area?
Older adults applying to move into the Gardens must be in good health and demonstrate that they are still active in endeavors that give their lives meaning. Because the Gardens covers costs of residents' health care and long term care, older adults with serious health issues are not eligible for admission. The resident community is built on the active participation of all residents in programs and activities - thus individuals who wish to apply for residence, and are no longer participating in their activities, are not eligible for residence.
How many locations do you have and do you have plans to expand?
The Gardens is located on the border of the cities of Claremont and Pomona, California. Over a period of 50-plus years, the campus area has expanded to include more property in Claremont and has developed new homes to accommodate today's residents' lifestyles and to expand care services for elders needing more nursing and personal support.
Provide detailed directions to your location
900 East Harrison Avenue is on the south side of Harrison Avenue, between Towne Avenue in Pomona and Mountain Avenue in Claremont. The 210 and 10 freeways both have Towne Avenue exits; the Gardens is located two blocks east of Towne Avenue.
What type of payments do you accept?
Residents pay an entry fee which covers the maintenance and depreciation of the home in which they will live, as well as covering the costs of future assisted living or skilled nursing care which may be needed.
Which areas do you service?
Gardens residents move to this community from the local area (primarily Los Angeles county), from other southern California communities, from around the state of California, other states and from other countries.
Who owns your company or runs daily operations?
Mt. San Antonio Gardens is incorporated as a non-profit, licensed as a Continuing Care Retirement Community and Life Care Community by the State of California Departments of Health, and Social Services. The corporation name is Congregational Homes, Inc.
What are your hours of operation?
Office hours are 8 a.m. through 4:30 p.m.
What is the best compliment anyone can give you?
"The Gardens residents are the most vibrant, active people we have met, and its campus is the most beautiful, among all the other retirement communities we have visited."
