Andrew Wood Acting Studio offers challenging, affordable classes for serious, motivated students
Andrew Wood Acting Studio provides high-quality, affordable actor training in Hollywood. Instructor Andrew Wood is a graduate of the directing program at the Yale School of Drama, and teaches the approach to acting that he encountered there with master teachers Earle Gister and Evan Yionoulis. The approach focuses on mining a script for significant circumstances and finding a compelling need to pursue in a scene. The goal is to activate the actor viscerally, producing vulnerability that is deeply compelling for any scene.
Classes run in 10-week cycles and focus on acting technique and scene study. The significant tools and distinctions are introduced through exercises and explanation in the first third of the course. In second two-thirds, students present scene work for comprehensive and thorough review and coaching. Students work on a single, substantial scene for the duration of the course, giving them the opportunity to delve deeply into the character's situation and priorities, The process of scene work review involves eliciting from actors their understanding of the circumstances of the scene, to make sure they have been grasped in a sufficiently compelling way and that strong objectives have been obtained from them. Weekly readings support and supplement the class work. Students are expected to meet with a scene partner outside of class for 90 minutes per week to rehearse, and to do substantial preparation work on their own.
Classes are affordably priced at $440 (may be adjusted seasonally)
An advanced class is available for students who have attended the Essentials class twice and obtained permission to join the Advanced Class. The Advanced Class provides some new content, but is principally a place for students who have spent some time acquiring some understanding of the methodology taught at Andrew Wood to work together in a concentrated way.
Classes often include introductions to other modalities such as the Alexander Technique and the Fitzmaurice Technique, or industry guests who advise students on the process of professional advancement.
A payment plan is available.
